Invoicing

Reading the live margin panel

What the colour bands mean and how to tune them.

Last updated 2026-05-04

When you create an invoice on a job, the right side of the page shows a live margin panel. Three numbers:

- Revenue: sum of selected lines, net of VAT. - Cost: sum of pay-rate × hours for selected timesheets, plus expense gross for selected expenses, plus any internal costs you've entered on manual lines. - Margin: revenue − cost, with the % in the headline.

The margin % gets a colour band:

- Green: ≥ 30% (default) - Amber: 15–29% - Red: < 15%

Tune the thresholds in Settings → Margin thresholds. The defaults match a typical UK service-business healthy-margin rule of thumb; trades that run on volume might want different bands.

Margin shows "—" when revenue is zero (e.g. you've ticked nothing yet) instead of a misleading negative number.
